October 2014 AKC Gazette President’s Letter
|
Happy birthday, CGC! We’re proud to be celebrating the 25th anniversary of AKC’s Canine Good Citizen® (CGC®) program this year. As the gold standard of behavior for all dogs, the program has had a major impact on the dog world.
The first official test was held in Dunedin, Florida in 1989 after then AKC VP of Obedience, James E. “Jim” Dearinger, led the creation of a program that would fulfill the need to recognize well-behaved dogs and their responsible owners in communities across the country.

Modification to Ramp Policy
|
At their October 2014 meeting the AKC Board of Directors modified several elements of the Board Policy regarding the usage of ramps in Conformation judging. All of the modifications are effective for shows held on or after January 1, 2015 and include the following:
- The Board approved a request submitted by the Chow Chow Club, Inc. for their breed to be expected to be judged on the ramp at the Breed, Group, and Best in Show levels.
- The expectation for Basset Hounds, Bulldogs, and Chow Chows to be judged on the ramp extends to all conformation competition at AKC conformation dog shows and any AKC event where a conformation title may be earned. This policy includes Junior Showmanship, the 4–6 Month Beginner Puppy Competition, the AKC National Owner-Handled Series (NOHS), and all other special attractions that offer Group and BIS competitions.
- At the discretion of the judge, the ramp will be available for all ramp optional breeds through all levels of competition including Group and Best in Show judging.
- The Board removed the requirement for judges requesting the use of a ramp to provide notification to the superintendent/show secretary 5 to 10 business days prior to the event.
As a reminder, English Springer Spaniels and Cardigan Welsh Corgis may be judged, at the discretion of the judge, on the ramp effective January 1, 2015.
The table-ramp list has been updated and posted on the AKC website in the Judging Resource Center.
These modifications to AKC Board policy require a greater number of ramps to be available at shows. Clubs, Show Secretaries and/or Superintendents are expected to provide a sufficient number of ramps at every show to ensure they are available for competition.

|
By Phil Guidry, Senior Policy Analyst, AKC Government Relations
In a recently issued opinion, the Oregon Supreme Court held that animals are the victims of animal cruelty crimes. While that decision may sound like common sense to most people, the opinion substantiates a considerable amount of thought on the purpose of the state’s animal cruelty laws.

|
Are you an AKC Club member? We have developed two great resources for you: The Club Member
Feedback Form and the AKC Clubs Facebook page.
The Club Feedback Form lives on akc.org and allows club members to submit feedback on AKC services, programs and initiatives.
In addition, we’d love to hear from you on ideas, comments and suggestions for improvement.
The feedback form lives in the Additional Resources section at the bottom of
akc.org/clubs.
Consider this an official invite to come join us at the AKC Clubs Facebook group, where
club members can discuss issues, share tactics and brainstorm on how to increase membership or draw more entries at you club’s next event.
We look forward to joining you on some great conversations and problem solving.
