Being a Junior Handler

By Audra Beard

The very first time I heard about "agility" was on a YouTube video. I thought it was the coolest sport I'd ever seen! I couldn't believe anyone could train a dog to do those things! That video made me curious about how a dog could learn such tricks. I started researching agility and watching "how to train" videos. My first "pupil" was our family pet, a Lab mix. She, with her easy-going personality, was a perfect pick for a beginner to learn on. I commandeered my dad to build a few basic obstacles, and trained our dog in our yard. We entered one trial and did well, but she was injured before her second trial. I ended up having to retire our Lab from competition because of her injury.

I first became interested in agility from watching my grandmother running with her sheltie in AKC trials. She and my parents helped me get my own dog, Smokey, and the fun began.

This delayed our flight about six hours.
