=2ygZ9v... I briefly mentioned that response last week, I promised that this episode would be all about 3D printing people, and in the intervening seven days y'all sent in a bunch of informative and interesting videos on the matter. But first: you may recall that two weeks ago Pogobat was all about... =tAcb8N... YouTube username "unable2wink" uploaded a response to the "happy birthday" quandary that's not only intellectually on point, but also features visual aids =Hp8eQX...
As much as copyright law needs reform, as much as I love to thumb my nose at the copyright lobby, you've got a point Mr. Unable2wink. Barats' video is clever and funny, but yeah I'm inclined to agree that "Happy Birthday" is still copyrighted. So here's a questiont: what is the least that one could change the "Happy Birthday Song" to put it just barely out of reach of the "moron in a hurry" argument?
The time has come. [WHAT IF WE COULD 3D PRINT PEOPLE?] ...Precisely. PezDSpencer01 submitted a video to the /r/pogobat subreddit featuring none other than my brother from a mother with a last name of another color [=vGacME...], here's Hank Green setting the 3D printing people stage. =5YYPJz...
Fascinating! But if you're still having a hard time visualizing exactly how body parts and organs might be 3D printed, Alex emailed me a link to a video from "ExplainingTheFuture" that does a pretty good job of... well... explaining the future. =9D749w...
From what I gather, 3D printing an entire person will be a pretty much impossibly tall order for as long as anyone can reasonably project into the future. If you want to create a new human the path of least resistance will remain, for a long time, the old fashioned route I mean, as a matter of principle I don't like saying that things are "impossible"--as digital age innovations continue to build off of each other, things previously believed to be impossible will start happening with exponentially increasing frequency. 3D printing people, though, is something that I just don't see us doing--not that we'll lack the technical means to do it, but by the time we have those means, we won't have much reason to. See, another technological realm progressing at an exponential clip is that of virtual reality. ]
I'm inclined to believe that by the time we develop the technology to print an entire human and then spark that human into sentience, we will have already had fully immersive, AI driven virtual reality that's pretty much indistinguishable from real reality for a while. Why go through all the trouble of printing a human when you could just simulate a human with the press of a button, and dip into the Matrix to hang out for a little bit?
Damian uploaded a response that's not only good, but also draws from personal experience and is tangentially relevant to what we've been discussing all episode. =ZqaAD...
Thank you for the response Damian. There's already a distinction between our "away from keyboard" identities and our digital identities. The way we come across on facebook, twitter, tumblr, YouTube, whatever, is necessarily different than how we come across in person. For example Damian, if I don't know you in person and I'm just reading your twitter feed, or even watching a vlog of yours where your wheelchair isn't in the shot, I wouldn't necessarily know that you have cerebral palsy. As the digital space grows bigger and more complex, and subsequently more and more aspects of our lives migrate to it, we will all have more control over how we present ourselves. I mean, Should the sort of full immersion virtual reality we were discussing earlier actually come to fruition, your avatar could be Arnold Schwarzenegger and nobody would be the wiser. And even if we don't get that far, at the very least more interaction in the digital space is more interaction in a space where many "disabilities" aren't all that disabling.
