Nike Plus Review Apple and Nike have partnered to create this ingenious little device that may make runners out of all folks. Everyone wants to own, but few people do -- including me. It's not without flaws, but Nike Plus does what it should. It making you run. I've tried to be a runner. Multiple times. But for some reason they have never really saddled with me. Or rather, I've never really tied to running. And it's not too I'm not athletic either. I spent my youth playing almost every sport there's - basketball, baseball, ice hockey, soccer, take your pick... I love sports. But I could never enter into running. For me, it is usually the scoring that means it is fun. The fact that there's a winner and a loser; the truth that I played a lot better than I did yesterday; the truth that I scored 20 points this time around. It's not really that the fun lies in the numbers, but rather in the a feeling of accomplishment once you reach a quantitative goal. I never got that feeling when I went running. I could have always purchased a pedometer I suppose, however for some reason I just never did. Not until just recently, which is. I saw a commercial for the Nike Plus Sports Kit, that is essentially an add-on on your iPod. It collects your running data from a tiny sensor that you place in your shoe. After your run, you plug in your iPod to your computer, and also the data uploads for a account around the Nike Plus website. You can view graphs illustrating precisely how far you ran, or where part of your amount to were the easiest, or whenever you slowed down. You can see your previous outings, and plan future runs as well. If you input your long term goal (i.e. you may want to eventually manage a marathon distance), Nike Plus will suggest a running schedule that will slowly build in difficulty until you reach that goal. You may also also get feedback on your run too, by pressing for the center button at any moment. The system will tell you (in a male or female voice, according to your preference) the length of time and how long you've run thus far. Upon completing your regular workout, Nike Plus might also tell you that you just've operate a personal ideal for a certain distance. This is one of many features that makes the system addictive, because even if you run just for a mile you are able to still keep pushing yourself to beat your better time with the distance. Whether your goals is speed or distance can be you. Now, the Nike Plus Sports kit costs $29, which is just the shoe sensor along with the iPod receiver. Of course you need to own an iPod Nano or Touch in the first place. There are other accessories it is possible to purchase if you are really hardcore, including the arm-band or the Nike Plus compatible shoes, however these are not essential. I usually just hold my iPod during my hand as I run, with my thumb at the center button to ensure that I can trigger frequent updates regarding how I'm doing. While I did buy the Nike Plus shoes, they're by no means a must. A regular pair of sneakers are merely as good in case you figure out one method or another to attach the sensor somewhere in your regular kicks. I recommend some form of DIY vel-cro improvisation, or even cutting a hole in the Dr. Scholls insert. Sensor Battery Life: The big drawback is always that once your sensor's battery dies, you should buy a brand new one. I hear the average lifespan is around 1000 runs, that's not all of that bad. If you like the system enough to have that much use from it, you likely won't mind dishing out for any new sensor either. Finalizing Workout Data Could be Easier: At the end of your run you need to press the Menu button and then scroll the clickwheel into the End Workout option. This can be tough if you are bent over and huffing and puffing in exhaustion, with virtually no control over your fingers! (Maybe I need more conditioning!) But seriously, there is certainly nothing as frustrating as pushing yourself a long run, just to lose crucial computer data by accidentally clicking a bad button upon your return. I think Menu, then hold center button would certainly be a better way to end training session. Despite these few drawbacks, the Nike Plus system well could be among the best gadget purchases you could possibly ever make. Software and games and computers are common well and good, fat your health is one area that should come before all of those. I've had that sentiment in the back of my mind to the past several years, but rarely have I lots of people moved to find a solution. While it hasn't turned me into a marathon runner by any stretch of the imagination, the Nike Plus does achieve getting me out for a run at the very least 3 times every week. And that's definitely money spent well.
