4.      HYPOTHESIS:  Establishing a jointed goatgrass technology transfer program within each state included in the National Jointed Goatgrass Research Program will enhance jointed goatgrass information flow and provide producers a better understanding of the best management practices (BMPs) for their area.

5.      PROPOSAL SUMMARY: The ultimate success of the National Jointed Goatgrass Research Program includes a strong technology transfer program to better provide state extension specialists with various jointed goatgrass information.  However, considerable environmental differences are seen between wheat producing areas throughout the western United States, which lead to dramatic differences in agronomic practices.  To better recognize these agronomic differences, technology transfer programs will be developed for each listed state to increase the distribution of jointed goatgrass information flow to localized wheat production areas.  Dr. Tony White, Extension Coordinator, will oversee jointed goatgrass extension programs in nine states including, Washington, Oregon, Idaho, Utah, Wyoming, Colorado, Nebraska, Kansas, and Oklahoma.  

6.      OBJECTIVES: 

A.     Develop and distribute information on jointed goatgrass and its management in winter wheat at field days, grower meetings, and crop scouting schools.

B.     Provide educational materials to extension agents/educators and crop consultants for their use in grower education activities.

C.     Provide producers with recent jointed goatgrass information through electronic or printed publication avenues.

D.     In 2005-2006, Jointed Goatgrass Management Workshops will be conducted in each of four designated regions including the Pacific Northwest, Intermountain States, Central Great Plains, and Southern Great Plains.  Each individual state will participate in workshop activities within their region. 

7.      JUSTIFICATION:  The main goal of the National Jointed Goatgrass Research Program is to provide producers throughout the western United States with the most recent information regarding jointed goatgrass.  Over the past several years, scientists involved in the program have contributed valuable information regarding the biology, ecology, genetics, and control of jointed goatgrass.  Technology transfer has been strong in the past, but the extension aspect of the program must be taken to the next phase.  The next phase is designed to provide each state extension specialist listed in the proposal with the means to enhance jointed goatgrass information flow to producers, county extension personnel, and crop consultants.

8.      METHODS: 

All States.  During each of the first two years, travel funding will allow at least three grower meeting or field day presentations to present important jointed goatgrass information to producers within each state.  Personnel are required to make at least one presentation devoted entirely to jointed goatgrass research information.  In 2004-05, the Extension Coordinator will continue to present jointed goatgrass information to producers throughout each state and individual states will participate in a regional jointed goatgrass workshop for producers, crop consultants, and county extension agents.

Research updates, fact sheets and Research Reports will be developed by the Extension Coordinator or state specialist to further enhance jointed goatgrass information flow to producers in each state.  Articles will also be published on the jointed goatgrass or state wheat commission websites.  Press releases containing important jointed goatgrass information will also be submitted to various local media sources.  Local and regional data will be used to develop jointed goatgrass information.  Extension activities will be developed specifically to meet the needs of each state. 

Washington.  Information on Clearfield wheat technology will be developed for Washington.  Extension circulars, field day handouts, and electronic slide sets will be developed to demonstrate effective jointed goatgrass control practices.  Information pertaining to the effects of jointed goatgrass in spring cereal crops will also be distributed throughout the state.

IdahoVarious methods of technology transfer will be used to promote the initiative and educate producers about jointed goatgrass management in Idaho.  Various Research Reports and local news releases will be developed on jointed goatgrass management in this area.  Printed information on BMPs and other components included in controlling jointed goatgrass will also be developed.

OregonThe introduction of Clearfield wheat has sparked the curiosity of many wheat producers who battle jointed goatgrass.  The Extension Coordinator and state Extension Weed Scientist will develop and distribute field day handouts and fact sheets on Clearfield wheat issues including stewardship practices and resistance management strategies with respect to jointed goatgrass.  Printed information on BMPs and other components included in controlling jointed goatgrass will be supplied.

UtahProducers in Utah generally accept information from electronic or printed sources better than a traditional county grower workshop format.  Jointed goatgrass extension activities in Utah will include the development of extension circulars or fact sheets, experiment station reports, and slide sets.  Electronic presentations will include PowerPoint and internet displays available to extension agents, consultants, and producers throughout the Intermountain Region. 

WyomingProducers in Wyoming typically like to take home and review printed reference material for issues including jointed goatgrass control in winter wheat.  Fact sheets and field day supplements will be developed and used to provide producers with the necessary information required to implement their own jointed goatgrass management program. 

NebraskaJointed goatgrass extension activities in Nebraska will include the development of extension circulars or fact sheets, PowerPoint presentations with speaker notes, and an internet picture library available to extension educators, consultants, and producers throughout Nebraska and the Central Great Plains Region.

Colorado.  Fact sheets and field day handouts will be developed and distributed pertaining to wheat cropping systems throughout Colorado.  Additional printed information regarding jointed goatgrass BMPs will also be provided to local producers.  The utility of Clearfield wheat technology on jointed goatgrass control will be addressed in various technology transfer activities.

Kansas.  The introduction of Clearfield wheat in northwestern Kansas has been widely accepted by many wheat producers who battle jointed goatgrass.  The Extension Coordinator and two state Extension Scientists will develop and distribute field day handouts and fact sheets on jointed goatgrass and Clearfield wheat issues.  Printed information on BMP practices and other components included in controlling jointed goatgrass will be supplied.

OklahomaOklahoma wheat fields are infested with mixed populations of jointed goatgrass, feral rye, Italian ryegrass, cheat, rescuegrass, downy brome, Japanese brome, and wild oat.  Control options of these weeds vary dramatically.  Therefore, managing these winter grasses is dependent on proper species identification.  To address this issue, a brief weed identification publication will be developed to assist producers and commercial applicators, throughout the growing season, with their weed identification needs.  The image filled publication will focus on the (1) key identifying characteristics at each growth stage of each weed and (2) control options for each weed.  Through proper identification, producers should better combat the jointed goatgrass problem in Oklahoma.

Fact sheets and field day handouts pertaining to continuous wheat systems and the effects of cattle grazing will be developed and distributed throughout Oklahoma.  Additional printed information regarding jointed goatgrass management will be supplied as requested by the state Extension Weed Scientist.  Information regarding Clearfield wheat technology will be developed and distributed as requested by the state specialist.
