The project is on schedule. ORIGINAL HYPOTHESIS: Jointed goatgrass will have a higher outcrossing rate than wheat due to its longer flowering period and glume separation during anthesis. SUMMARY OF PROGRESS: The field studies have been established in Oregon and Colorado. OBJECTIVE: Determine the OC rates of jointed goatgrass under different environmental conditions. EXPERIMENTAL DESIGN: Field experiments will be conducted at Pendleton, OR and Fort Collins, CO. Pollinator plants of pubescent jointed goatgrass and target plants of glabrous jointed goatgrass will be grown following methods outlined by (Hucl 1996). Pubescence is a dominant trait and can be used as a morphological marker to determine the level of OC that occurs on the glabrous jointed goatgrass. A dominant morphological marker, either blue-seeded or awnless, will be used in winter wheat. Plots will be 2 m long and the rows 20 cm apart. The treatments will be replicated four times. Pollen receptor rows of jointed goatgrass and wheat will be harvested at maturity, and percentage of OC determined from progeny testing. Seed produced in the field will be collected and progeny testing conducted to determine the rate of OC. In addition to the morphological markers, molecular markers will be used to confirm OC. PROGRESS: The field studies have been established in Oregon and Colorado. The trial was planted on September 24, 2002 at the ARDEC research center near Ft. Collins, CO. The trial was planted on October 17, 2002 at the CBARC research center in Pendleton, OR. Plants have emerged at both sites. PUBLICATIONS: None as the studies have just been established.
