Minitab Instructions: Hypothesis Testing for the Population Proportion p
Here is how you conduct the z-test for the population proportion (p) in Minitab:
- Choose: Stat -> Basic Statistics -> 1 Proportion
- Enter the data. There are two ways to perform the test, depending on whether you have the raw data, or summarized values:
- If you have the raw data in a Minitab worksheet, choose the "Samples in columns" option, and enter the column containing the data.
- If the data are summarized, as they are in our case (out of a random sample of 316 airplanes, 40 were found to have contaminated water), enter the sample size, and how many of the subjects have the characteristic of interest.
- Click on "Options"
- Next to "Test proportion," enter the null value, p0.
- Choose the relevant alternative.
- Check "Use this...normal distribution."
- Click "OK" twice.
Comment: As we mentioned above, if the raw data are given we can (instead of giving the summarized values) tell Minitab what column the raw data are in. Click here to open Minitab with the raw data of this study, and verify that when you run the test, you get the same output.
