StatTutor is a learning tool that provides you with a data analysis problem, supports you as you attempt to solve it, and gives you hints and feedback along the way. It assumes that the relevant data set is open in the background.

One of the main ideas behind StatTutor is to demonstrate that when solving data analysis problems we always go through the same set of steps. Those steps are shown on the left side of StatTutor, and you will click on them in sequence as you progress through the lab. Clicking on each step will cause a new worksheet to appear below for you to complete.

Note that you must provide a correct answer to all questions in a given step or provide a written response before being able to proceed. The system will bounce you back to a page that does not have all the questions correct or is missing an answer.

If you get stuck along the way, you can ask for hints by clicking on the hint button.

    To begin:
    • Read the Problem description at the top of the screen to find out the context of this StatTutor exercise.
    • Click the Questions tab and take a look at the questions you are going to answer.
    • Click the Variables tab to see the variables in this study.
    • Click the Data tab to download the dataset and preview the data.

Once you've done that, either click on "Understand the Problem" in the Work Plan on the left or click on Understand the Problem to continue.

Before we begin looking at specific questions, we examine some general features of the problem, such as the data structure, how the data were collected, and the overall study design.

If you have not done so already, read the Problem description at the top of the screen, and take a look at the Questions and Variables as well.

When you are ready, click on Check Data Format to continue.

We will start by answering some questions about the data. First, go to the Data Tab and choose the statistics package you wish to use and then download the dataset if you have not done so already.

When you are done, click on Question 1 to continue.

The next step in understanding the problem is addressing the issues of sampling and study design, which have implications on the generalizability of the results and the type of conclusions you can draw from them.

Now that you have completed your analysis, discuss the strengths and weaknesses of you conclusions. In particular, address each of the following:

    • Does the study design allow you to make causal conclusions? Why or why not?
    • To what population does the sampling design allow you to generalize the results?

After you answer these questions, you are done!
