There are 17 commercial categories in Wisconsin. Other States have different rules regarding this process. Not all categories will deal with homeowners:

Categories that you would most find involved with the home. | ||
Turf & Landscape | Control of pests in your yard. Lawn and ornamental tree and shrub care and pest control. The person you hire to control emerald ash borer is certified in this category. | |
Structural | This category controls pests in your home or on the outside of it. Applicators who control rats and mice, bedbugs and other pests in the home will be certified in this. | |
Termite Control | Applicators who control termite in structures. This is one of those pests that has its own category. | |
Aquatic & Mosquito | Another category that singles out a pest. Turf & Landscape applicators who apply mosquito treatments in your yard have to be certified in both Turf & Landscape and Aquatic & Mosquito. | |
Sewer Line Root | This category are for applicators who use pesticides to control roots in sewer lines. | |
Companion Animals | People, other than veterinarians or veterinary technicians, who get paid to apply flea treatments or worm treatments to the dog or cat (companion animals) have to be certified in this category. | |

Field & Vegetable | This category covers all the applicators who apply to agricultural fields with row crops and vegetables. | |
Fruit Crops | Applicators who apply to Fruit Crops, such as orchards and cranberries, can specialize in those crops by certifying in this category. | |
Livestock & Poultry | This category is for applicators who apply pesticides on or around agricultural animals. This is also used around large animal facilities. Also covers rat and mouse control in horse barns, etc. | |
Forestry | Applicators that apply pesticides in a forest plantation. This includes disease, weed, and insect control. | |
Greenhouse & Nursery | This is a specialized category for applicators who apply pesticides in greenhouses and/or nurseries. | |
Seed Treatment | Many of the seed bought or planted are treated with insecticides or fungicides to control the insects or diseases that effect germination and seedling vigor. Applicators who apply to the seed have to be certified in this category. | |
Antifouling Paints | There are a number of pests that will colonize surfaces submerged in water. Antifouling paints are paints that have pesticides in them to inhibit these pests growth and keep these surfaces clean. | |
Right of Way | Applicators who apply herbicides along the roads, rail roads or power-lines are certified in this category. This category includes applicators who apply to natural areas to control invasive plant species. | |
Mixer & Loader | This is a unique category in that people certified in this category only mix and load pesticide, they are not allowed to be involved in applying the pesticides. | |
Space & Commodity Fumigation | In certain places such as grain bins and warehouses fumigation is used to control pests. This is a very specific type of applicator that does this for fumigants require additional care. | |
Wood Preservation | Wood products such as treated lumber, railway ties and telephone poles are treated with pesticides that inhibit wood destroying insects and fungi. These treatments will make the wood last longer. | |
Subcategory: Soil Fumigation | Subcategories require that the applicator get certified in one of the above before getting certification in a subcategories. |
