- Abstract:

"USDA has purchased a Enterprise Premium license for this Orthoimagery dataset from DigitalGlobe, Inc. Any government, education, not-for-profit agency and public/individuals not engaged in using the "Product for Commercial Exploitation or Commercial Purposes" can use this licensed data. Use of this product for Commercial Purposes by a person/company/organization for a profit or fee is strictly prohibited. Please refer to the separately attached license from DigitalGlobe, Inc. for additional information. Digital orthoimagery combines the image characteristics of a digital image with the geometric qualities of a map. The primary dynamic digital orthophoto is a 50 centimeter ground resolution, image cast to the customer specified projection and datum defined in the Spatial Reference Information section of this metadata document. The overedge is included to facilitate tonal matching for mosaicking and ensure full coverage if the imagery is reprojected. The normal orientation of data is by lines (rows) and samples (columns). Each line contains a series of pixels ordered from west to east with the order of the lines from north to south.
DigitalGlobe WorldView-2 Satellite Orthoimagery was delivered to USDA in GeoTIFF file format. USDA created a composite mosaic in Erdas Imagine format using ERDAS 2011. ERDAS 2011 was used to produce a compressed file format data file called Erdas Compressed Wavelet (ECW). ECW is a compressed file formats that is much smaller than the orginal ERDAS Imagine files. The ECW compressed files is delivered with a separate FGDC compliant metadata file. The ECW file contains eight Multi-Spectral bands.
Band 1: Coastal Blue (400 - 450 nm)
Band 2: Blue (450 - 510 nm)
Band 3: Green (510 - 580 nm)
Band 4: Yellow (585 - 625 nm)
Band 5: Red (625 - 690 nm)
Band 6: Red Edge (705 - 745 nm)
Band 7: Color Infrared 1/NIR 1 (770 - 895 nm)
Band 8: Color Infrared 2/NIR 2 (860 - 1040 nm)"
An orthoimage is remotely sensed image data in which displacement of features in the image caused by terrain relief and sensor orientation have been mathematically removed. Orthoimagery combines the image characteristics of a photograph with the geometric qualities of a map. There is no image overlap between adjacent files.
Data received at Earth Resources Observation and Science Center (EROS) were verified as:
Projection: NAD_1983_UTM_Zone_04N
Resolution: 0.5000m
Type: Natural Color - 3-band - 8 bit
and resampled to align to the U.S. National Grid (USNG). The naming convention is based on the U.S. National Grid (USNG), taking the coordinates of the SW corner of the orthoimage. The naming convention is based on the U.S. National Grid (USNG), taking the coordinates of the SW corner of the orthoimage. The metadata were imported and updated for display through The National Map at <http://nationalmap.usgs.gov>. Chip-level metadata are provided in HTML and XML format. NOTE: Distribution of this imagery is limited to the National Geospatial Agency and all Federal partners. Data is not licensed, but is restricted to NGA and Federal partners. Data were compressed utilizing IAS software. The compression was JPEG2000 Lossy Compressed. The file format created was .jp2.

"Radiometry is verified by visual inspection of the digital orthophoto with the original unrectified image to determine if the digital orthophoto has the same or better image quality as the original unrectified input image. Slight systematic radiometric differences may be detected between adjacent DG ortho image files due primarily to differences in source imagery capture dates, and off-nadir or sun angles of the WorldView-2 Imagery."
- Logical_Consistency_Report:
-
All DG ortho image file sizes are validated by visual inspection.
- Completeness_Report:
-
"All DG imagery is visually inspected for completeness to ensure that no gaps or image misplacements exist in the image area or in overedge coverage. DG ortho images may be derived by mosaicking multiple images, in order to insure complete coverage. Most DG imagery is 10% cloud cover or less over land areas. Some clouds may be encountered within the DG imagery if acceptable to the customer at time of order placement."

- Horizontal_Positional_Accuracy:

- Horizontal_Positional_Accuracy_Report:

"The DG ortho image horizontal positional accuracy and the assurance of that accuracy depend, in part, on the accuracy of the data inputs to the rectification process. These inputs consist of the digital elevation model (DEM), Orthoimagery-extracted and/or GPS surveyed ground control, and WorldView-2 sensor calibrations and robust sensor models. USGS provided 10/30 meter DEMS. Horizontal positional accuracy is measured in the Geometric QA stage of the DigitalGlobe processing system. The process determines the accuracy relative to the input ortho images by finding sample coordinates of control points in the output DG ortho images and fitting these to their ground coordinates in the input orthoimagery base or control imagery to develop a root mean square error (RMSE). From 4 to 9 points are checked. Adjacent DG ortho images, when displayed together in a common planimetric coordinate system, may exhibit slight positional discrepancies across common DG ortho images boundaries. Linear features such as streets may not be continuous. These edge mismatches, however, still conform to positional horizontal accuracy at 1:24,000 scale within the National Standard for Spatial Data Accuracy (NSSDA), formerly called National Map Accuracy Standards (NMAS)."

'The rectification process requires as input, a digital elevation model gridded to Geographic Lat/Lon projection and WGS84 datum, a set of existing USGS orthoimages or a set of GPS surveyed ground control points, and a set of one or more WorldView-2 images covering the area to be processed into DG orthoimages. If surveyed control is not used, ground control points are acquired from existing orthoimagery. The positions of the ground control points are measured on the WorldView-2 digital imagery. Minimum control point configuration consists of 9 control points per WorldView-2 scene in a 3 x 3 arrangement. A quaternion based iterative analytical adjustment is used in the DigitalGlobe Product Processor to minimize the residual error in the measured ground control points in a least squared error sense. The DEM used in the production of DG orthoimages generally has a 10/30-meter grid post spacing and possesses a vertical RMSE of 7-meters or less. A DEM covering the extent of the WorldView-2 image set is used for the rectification.'

"USDA-NRCS-NGMC processed the DigitalGlobe delivered WorldView-2 Multi-Spectral/Pan data bundle to produce an 8 Band (Coastal Blue, Blue, Green, Yellow, Red, Red Edge, Near Infrared 1, Near Infrared 2) , 16 Bit Pan-Sharpen Mosaic using ERDAS 2011. As appropriate, tone or range adjustment were made to minimize tone differences between individual tiles and along mosaic seam lines. The 16-bit mosaic was rescaled to 8-bit. ERDAS 2011 was used to produce the compressed ECW file. ArcGIS 9.3.1 was used to create a FGDC compliant metadata file.
