Annoucements
The Ember Days: Wednesday, Friday and Saturday of this week are the September Ember Days. The intentions which the Church has in the fast of the Ember Days are to consecrate to God by penance the four seasons of the year. Thus in the fall, we ask His blessing upon the fall harvesting of the crops. It also has in view the ordination of the ministers of the Church, and so it is appropriate to pray for priests and seminarians and for vocations. Several early Church writers were of the opinion that the origin of the Ember Days dates back to Apostolic times.
The Church Laws of Fasting & Abstinence of the Ember Days: ABSTINENCE LAWS: All Catholics who have reached their seventh year are bound to the abstinence of the Ember Days. This means that on Wednesday and Saturday of this week, meat may be taken only once, at the principal meal. Friday is a day of complete abstinence from meat.
Fast Laws: Catholics between the ages of 21 and 59 are also bound to observe the fast on the Ember days. Only one full meal is allowed on a fast day. Two other meatless meals, sufficient to maintain strength, may be taken according to one's needs, but together they should not equal another full meal. Eating between meals is forbidden, but liquids, including milk and fruit juices, are allowed. Where health or ability to work would be seriously affected, the law does not oblige. In doubt, consult your pastor.
