Abstract:
This dataset was tablet digitized by Utah State University from a paper map produced by the Southeastern Cooperative Wildlife Disease Study (<http://www.uga.edu/scwds/>). This national map that was approximately at a scale of 1:2,000,000. The original maps were constructed based on input from state wildlife agency of each state. SCWDS asked them to assign density & distribution info based on the categories listed on each map and then to return the map for their state. SCWDS then compiled the national map (some times asking for resolution of cross border discrepancies). Thus, we do not have any data other than what is depicted on the maps but we do know that the data on which the various states based their estimates varied from relatively crude guesses to fairly extensive surveys/estimates.
Purpose:
These data are intended to provide a continental-level map of the historic distribution of mule deer and black tail deer in the coterminous United States.
