RushPlay 3D Overview
RushPlay 3D is the first dailies tool for feature film productions shooting in 3D. The workflow and associated software is an extension of the RushPlay XD workflow. It continues to take advantage of the principal features of the Sony XDCAM HD product line. The principal features which are utilized include the capability of MXF, and the capability of the hardware to hook up to a VTR as well as computer type storage device.
RushPlay 3D is a computer-based player which is capable of playing the MXF files generated by the Sony XDCAM HD. The player is provided to the production, and allows instant access to any given scene or take of a dailies reel. The player fully supports the 3D playback modes supported by many 3D visualization systems, including projection through a RealD system on the big screen, or for the smaller screen, to the new 3D LCD panels, such as those by Hyundai.
The Workflow – RushPlay 3D
The process for RushPlay 3D is identical to RushPlay XD, with the exception that the process is repeated for each eye.
1.The right eye is dubbed to Sony XDCAM Prodisc.
2.The left eye is dubbed to Sony XDCAM Prodisc.
3.The resulting Sony Prodiscs are authored with RushPlay XD.
4.The resulting prodiscs are delivered to the RushPlay 3D player for playback.
RushPlay 3D continues to build upon the same advantages of RushPlay XD. A key benefit to the process is that it is very simple for post to create the content, and requires little to no specialized training for tape ops. Pictured to the right is RushPlay in use on the production of “My Bloody Valentine 3-D.”
The RushPlay 3D takes care of all of the following items:
•It reformats the video on-the-fly to match the appropriate 3D display device automatically, without user interaction or changes by post to deliver different formats, and
oprovides rescale options necessary to 3D displays,
oprovides double framing options to 3D displays, and
oprovides pixel mapping and specialized reordering for yet other 3D displays
•It provides an interface for the client to control playback with standard functions like play pause, and stop.
•It includes random access functionality to access scenes and takes instantaneously
•It provides the ability to remotely control a 3D player which may be located in a machine control room, or simply up in the projection room.
