Do GPS Sneakers Actually Exist? When GPS sneakers were first introduced back 2007 there is a lot of public scoffing. Who needs GPS devices on their feet? What an impractical product--dumbest thought of the year! It's now 2011; are we ready for them yet? The idea for GPS sneakers first came to Isaac Daniels last 2002 when he received a phone call that his child choose to go missing at school. Mr. Daniels was on a business trip and immediately hopped a plane back home to locate that there have been a mix-up: His son had taken an unscheduled bathroom break and have been separated from his class. Mr. Daniels was relieved, however it set his mind to thinking. What if his son had actually gone missing? Wasn't there something that could be completed to help locate him? The answer ' GPS sneakers. The idea was the GPS unit on the underside with the shoe might be activated by depressing some control. This unit had a battery life of approximately 24 hours and would continually signal until the button was depressed a second time. Mr. Daniels suggested this may be perfect for hikers, outdoorsmen and children--the first 2 in case we were holding lost while browsing and the latter for extreme cases like abduction. The first GPS sneakers were marketed with the Fele Corporation in 2007 and retailed for $325. They were the sneakers that got trashed inside the press. Only a few hiking and travel websites took them seriously. Although the concept was sound, there is little industry for a shoe that needed a $19.95 monthly subscription-monitoring service, plus an initial run was only for a few hundred (though it was reported that retail outlets were preordering them through the tens of thousands). Fele ceased operation in 2008. Undaunted by the failure of his first company, Isaac Daniel continued his imagine GPS shoes. His second endeavor, IsaacDaniel.com , marketed a new GPS sneaker line ' the Blue shoe. The Blue shoe was furnished with Bluetooth technology that connected the shoe to some GPS-enabled phone or PDA. The shoe retailed at $150 with the optional $19.95 subscription-monitoring fee like the initial GPS sneaker. As of the writing of this article, the IsaacDaniel website has disappeared and so are these shoes. They are not offered at any online or brick-and-mortar retailer. The GTX corporation appears to be the only current viable source for GPS shoes. They have an alternative story of how the corporation came up with the thought for GPS tracking in shoes that highlights the Elizabeth Smart case. GTX is expecting to have a marketable product available to buy from Aetrex.com through the end of Spring 2011 (at the time of March 2011 there's no mention around the Aetrex site). The estimated retail is between $200 and $300. GTX also announced that the Ambulatory shoe (for dementia patients) will probably be available for $200 at Foot.com, GPSShoe.com, and also at select assisted living facilities, starting in September. The tracking service will cost $40 to $50 a month. The tracking service work with Google maps to observe residents wearing these comfortable shoes. If they travel outside a predefined area an alert will be sent to the care facility with all the exact location from the individual. GTX has also expressed fascination with working with major shoe brands, even though they haven't named names, and stepping into the children's shoe market.
