Product Reviews :: Real US made basketball shoes? You've got a chance to be kidding! My faithful couple of basketball shoes was wearing somewhat thin so I reluctantly decided arrived to replace them. Being interested in what outsourcing is doing to the US economy I resolved that I would replace my old Reeboks (that have been made in Korea) with a set of two real and 100% genuine "Made in USA" basketball shoes. During the procedure I wanted to stay out with the clutches with the scammers and spammers who were selling fake replica shoes. First I went online and looked at the dazzling selection of beautiful new court shoes available, but there were no indication of where these has been made so off I visited Google. There I soon found that all of big brand shoes for example Big N? ( you realize who I mean the king of shoes which made over the billion dollars profit this past year) were made overseas, that the labor practices in their overseas plants seemed to be less than desirable, and that this foreign operations of the number of U.S. shoe companies made a lot to become desired. From there I decided to attempt the Mall and thought about the labels of all the so-called brand name basketball shoes - "Made in VietNam", "Made in Korea", Made in China", "Made in Thailand", "Made in "Indonesia" and "Made in Brazil". Not a single pair "Made in USA". This didn't apparently help much so I turned on the hovering clerk and asked if she had any Made in USA shoes. That question did actually bewilder her, so I asked clerks in other stores and those who were not stunned with that question told me that there is no such thing being an American made basketball shoe, with all the possible exception of Chuck Taylors. I was soon to determine that even creation of these stalwarts was moved overseas when Nike bought out Converse in 2003. I went back home perplexed plus a bit disappointed but resolved to travel straight on the horse?s mouth, so I started calling the corporate headquarters of some of the major US shoe manufacturers to find the real story. Nike told me that they were still manufacturing in Indonesia "and all countries in that region", knowning that "it has not been economically feasible to manufacture in the United States". This is the same company that developed a profit well over $450 million within the third quarter of 2007 alone? The nice lady at L.A. Gear seemed a bit surprised when I asked if their shoes were manufactured in USA but informed me that their shoes were made in Brazil and several countries in Asia. Being nothing or even stubborn, I kept the phone warm and called Reebok but all I was told was that "All individuals shoes are made somewhere outside from the United States". When I told this lady that I was focused on shoes being created in deplorable conditions overseas she sent me a pleasant brochure which assured me that their shoes were manufactured under circumstances "appropriate in light of national practices and conditions". Several calls later I found these countries were China, Thailand, Indonesia, Korea, along with the Philippines. Sigh! K-Swiss shoes would only claim that they manufactured "offshore" when I called New Balance I was told that 70% of these shoes are made in the United States, while using remaining 30% stated in Europe and Asia. Sadly none of their shoes appeared to fit my needs. Somewhat discouraged I sat down and contemplated it for a lttle bit. How much will it matter I wondered? How easily do principles give way for the need for better ankle support, brand loyalty, fashion or better pricing? What's all of this flap about foreign made replica shoes? Are all of the shoes sold online fakes because they are all made overseas? How can I know if an online shoe site is selling fake replicas or the genuine real thing? Does it matter providing that the shoes are good? What exactly is a fake and what is real or genuine? So I thought we would join the group and went back on the internet and found a nice couple of basketball shoes from a company called kicksbay.com. They probably were not produced in USA but the price was right, these shoes were delivered promptly, they fit well and seem to become just as good as my old Reeboks in the game. Their customer service was helpful and I will most likely buy from them the very next time, regardless of whether I wish I could find a set of two Made in USA basketball shoes. And now I am using a hard rethink about every one of the fuss the important manufactures are earning over "fake or replica" shoes. Is a set of shoes that came out from the same factory that produces Nikes or Addidas? shoes every bit as good as the "genuine the real guy" or include the high prices we are paying simply to support the billion dollar profits some of these companies decide to make? It is food for thought and perhaps more articles. |
