Do GPS Sneakers Actually Exist? When GPS sneakers were first introduced last 2007 there is a lot of public scoffing. Who needs GPS devices on their feet? What an impractical product--dumbest notion of the year! It's now 2011; shall we be held ready for them yet? The idea for GPS sneakers first found Isaac Daniels back in 2002 when he received a trip that his child went missing from school. Mr. Daniels was on the business trip and immediately hopped an airplane back home to discover that there have been a mix-up: His son had taken an unscheduled bathroom break and have been separated from his class. Mr. Daniels was relieved, but it set his mind to thinking. What if his son had actually gone missing? Wasn't there something which could be done to help locate him? The answer ' GPS sneakers. The idea was how the GPS unit on the underside of the shoe might be activated by depressing a control button. This unit were built with a battery life around 24 hours and would continually signal until the button was depressed a second time. Mr. Daniels suggested this would be perfect for hikers, outdoorsmen and children--the first 2 in case we were holding lost while browsing and the latter for extreme cases like abduction. The first GPS sneakers were marketed with the Fele Corporation in 2007 and retailed for $325. They were the sneakers that got trashed within the press. Only a few hiking and travel websites took them seriously. Although the idea was sound, there were little niche for a shoe that needed a $19.95 monthly subscription-monitoring service, with an initial run only agreed to be for a few hundred (even though it was reported that shops were preordering them from the tens of thousands). Fele ceased operation in 2008. Undaunted through the failure of his first company, Isaac Daniel continued his imagine GPS shoes. His second endeavor, IsaacDaniel.com , marketed a new GPS sneaker line ' the Blue shoe. The Blue shoe was built with Bluetooth technology that connected the shoe to a GPS-enabled phone or PDA. The shoe retailed at $150 having an optional $19.95 subscription-monitoring fee like the initial GPS sneaker. As in the writing informed, the IsaacDaniel website is gone and so are these shoes. They are not available at any online or brick-and-mortar retailer. The GTX corporation appears to be the only current viable source for GPS shoes. They have another story of how the corporation came up with the concept for GPS tracking in shoes that highlights the Elizabeth Smart case. GTX is looking to have a marketable product for sale from Aetrex.com through the end of Spring 2011 (by March 2011 there isn't any mention on the Aetrex site). The estimated retail is between $200 and $300. GTX also announced that the Ambulatory shoe (for dementia patients) will likely be available for $200 at Foot.com, GPSShoe.com, and also at select assisted living facilities, starting in September. The tracking service will cost $40 to $50 monthly. The tracking service will continue to work with Google maps to evaluate residents wearing these shoes. If they travel outside of a predefined area an alert is going to be sent to the care facility with the exact location of the individual. GTX has additionally expressed interest in working with major shoe brands, but they haven't named names, and stepping into the children's shoe market.
