Product Reviews :: Real US made basketball shoes? You've have got to be kidding! My faithful pair of basketball shoes was wearing just a little thin so I reluctantly decided it was time to replace them. Being worried about what outsourcing has been doing to the US economy I resolved that I would replace my old Reeboks (that had been made in Korea) with a couple of real and 100% genuine "Made in USA" basketball shoes. During the method I wanted to keep out with the clutches in the scammers and spammers who have been selling fake replica shoes. First I went on the internet and looked at the dazzling assortment of beautiful new court shoes available, but there is no indication of where these may have been made so off I went to Google. There I soon learned that all of big brand shoes like Big N? ( you already know who I mean the king of shoes which made more than a billion dollars profit a year ago) were made overseas, the labor practices in their overseas plants seemed to be less than desirable, and that this foreign operations of a number of U.S. shoe companies made a lot to be desired. From there I decided to test the Mall and looked at the labels of all the brand name basketball shoes - "Made in VietNam", "Made in Korea", Made in China", "Made in Thailand", "Made in "Indonesia" and "Made in Brazil". Not just one pair "Made in USA". This didn't apparently help much so I turned towards the hovering clerk and asked if she had any Made in USA shoes. That question did actually bewilder her, so I asked clerks in other stores and those who have been not stunned by this question explained that there was no such thing just as one American made basketball shoe, with the possible exception of Chuck Taylors. I was soon to discover that even creation of these stalwarts was moved overseas when Nike bought out Converse in 2003. I went back home perplexed and a bit disappointed but resolved to go straight towards the horse?s mouth, so I started calling the organization headquarters of some of the major US shoe manufacturers to have the real story. Nike explained that they were still manufacturing in Indonesia "and all countries because region", which "it had not been economically possible to manufacture inside United States". This is the same company that made a profit that could reach over $450 million within the third quarter of 2007 alone? The nice lady at L.A. Gear seemed a lttle bit surprised when I asked if their shoes were manufactured in USA but told me that their shoes were stated in Brazil as well as some countries in Asia. Being nothing or else stubborn, I kept the device warm and called Reebok but all I was told was that "All of our own shoes are made somewhere outside with the United States". When I told this lady that I was concerned with shoes being stated in deplorable conditions overseas she sent me a very nice brochure which assured me that their shoes were manufactured under circumstances "appropriate in light of national practices and conditions". Several calls later I found the countries were China, Thailand, Indonesia, Korea, and the Philippines. Sigh! K-Swiss shoes would only state that they manufactured "offshore" however, if I called New Balance I was told that 70% of the shoes are manufactured in the United States, with all the remaining 30% manufactured in Europe and Asia. Sadly none of these shoes appeared to fit my tastes. Somewhat discouraged I sat down and considered it for a lttle bit. How much should it matter I wondered? How easily do principles give way for the need for better ankle support, brand loyalty, fashion and better pricing? What's this all flap about foreign made replica shoes? Are each of the shoes sold online fakes being that they are all made overseas? How can I tell if an online shoe site is selling fake replicas or even the genuine genuine thing? Does it genuinely matter provided that the shoes are good? What exactly is really a fake and what is real or genuine? So I decided to join everyone else and went back online and found a nice set of two basketball shoes from your company called kicksbay.com. They probably were not produced in USA though the price was right, these comfortable shoes were delivered promptly, they can fit well and seem to become just as good as my old Reeboks at basketball. Their customer support was helpful and I will probably buy from them the next occasion, regardless of whether I wish I could find a pair of Made in USA basketball shoes. And now I am having a hard rethink about every one of the fuss the top manufactures are making over "fake or replica" shoes. Is a pair of shoes that came out of the same factory who makes Nikes or Addidas? shoes every bit as good as the "genuine genuine thing" or are the high prices we are paying only to support the high dollar profits some of these companies are generating? It is food for thought and perhaps more articles. |
