Are Vegan Shoes the Most Eco Friendly Option? by Ceri Heathcote People may pick a vegan lifestyle for any variety of reasons including health, environmental surroundings and animal welfare. Vegans do not eat or buy any products that contain any animal products. A vegan lifestyle involves finding choices to many of the everyday things that many people ignore including clothes and shoes. Many shoes are made of leather which is not acceptable to vegans, fortunately they are glued together. Glue is made using animal bones. In a number of ways the vegan lifestyle is good for environmental surroundings and a sustainable approach to life. The rearing of animals carries a carbon footprint which contributes to global warming so not wanting to eat meat or using leather cuts cuts down on individuals carbon footprint. The leather accustomed to make shoes can be usually tanned using very toxic chemicals which cause pollution and health threats to those working in the tanneries. Then there is the glue that is accustomed to make many shoes, again its manufacture causes pollution and injury to human health. So in some ways vegan shoes are a sustainable and green option. But there's things, there can also be another side for the story. Whilst non leather shoes might be better for the surroundings, synthetic alternatives can be damaging. The process employed to make man-made materials is usually energy intensive and uses non renewable resources (oil). Synthetic shoes are also non biodegradable so once their useful our life is over they are usually disposed of and contribute towards the growing problem of landfill. So which are the alternatives? It may be possible to find vegan shoes which are friendly to the environment sustainable and satisfy the needs of your vegan in terms of not containing animal products. Completely natural and sustainable materials work best option as they will biodegrade and are generally renewable. Recently materials like coconut husk, natural latex, hemp and cork have been used to make shoes which look good, are strong , durable and allow the feet to breathe. Not only are these natural alternatives better for the surroundings but they are also usually much more comfortable and kinder to your feet. Hemp can be dyed a number of bright colours which look stylish and so on trend. Cork may be the bark or perhaps a tree native to Portugal and can be harvested without injury to the tree. It makes is great for any quirky and normal looking shoe. Shoes can be stitched together as an alternative to using glue which not simply looks great but makes them strong and hardwearing. A pair of shoes that is made to last can be the best choice for the environment as it ensures minimal impact and much less waste. This article was authored by Ceri Heathcote.
