Do GPS Sneakers Actually Exist? When GPS sneakers were first introduced in 2007 there were a lot of public scoffing. Who needs GPS devices on their own feet? What an impractical product--dumbest idea of the year! It's now 2011; shall we be ready for them yet? The idea for GPS sneakers first found Isaac Daniels back 2002 when he received a phone call that his child had opted missing at school. Mr. Daniels was on a business trip and immediately hopped an aircraft back home to find that there have been a mix-up: His son had taken an unscheduled bathroom break and had been separated from his class. Mr. Daniels was relieved, nonetheless it set his mind to thinking. What if his son had actually gone missing? Wasn't there something that could be carried out to help locate him? The answer ' GPS sneakers. The idea was that this GPS unit on the underside of the shoe might be activated by depressing a control button. This unit had a battery life of approximately 24 hours and would continually signal before button was depressed a second time. Mr. Daniels suggested this could be perfect for hikers, outdoorsmen and children--the first 2 in case we were holding lost while exploring and the latter for extreme cases like abduction. The first GPS sneakers were marketed with the Fele Corporation in 2007 and retailed for $325. They were the sneakers that got trashed in the press. Only a few hiking and travel websites took them seriously. Although the theory was sound, there were little marketplace for a shoe that needed a $19.95 per month subscription-monitoring service, plus an initial run was only for a few hundred (though it was reported that stores were preordering them through the tens of thousands). Fele ceased operation in 2008. Undaunted from the failure of his first company, Isaac Daniel continued his desire GPS shoes. His second endeavor, IsaacDaniel.com , marketed a new GPS sneaker line ' the Blue shoe. The Blue shoe was equipped with Bluetooth technology that connected the shoe to some GPS-enabled phone or PDA. The shoe retailed at $150 having an optional $19.95 subscription-monitoring fee like the initial GPS sneaker. As from the writing informed, the IsaacDaniel website is gone and so are the shoes. They are not offered by any online or brick-and-mortar retailer. The GTX corporation is apparently the only current viable source for GPS shoes. They have another story of how the organization came up with the idea for GPS tracking in shoes that highlights the Elizabeth Smart case. GTX is hoping to have a marketable product available for sale from Aetrex.com through the end of Spring 2011 (since March 2011 there is no mention on the Aetrex site). The estimated retail is between $200 and $300. GTX also announced that the Ambulatory shoe (for dementia patients) will be available for $200 at Foot.com, GPSShoe.com, and also at select assisted living facilities, starting in September. The tracking service will set you back $40 to $50 monthly. The tracking service works with Google maps to observe residents wearing these comfortable shoes. If they travel away from a predefined area an alert will be sent to the care facility with the exact location from the individual. GTX in addition has expressed interest in working with major shoe brands, although they haven't named names, and getting into the children's shoe market.
