Habits of Mind - Thinking Interdependently
(http://www.chsvt.org/wdp/Habits_of_Mind_Curriculum_VT_WDP.pdf)
Resources:
• Group packs containing Worksheet 1: Making the Hollow Square (pg. 32), and
Worksheet 2: The Hollow Square (pp. 33 – 36) with the hollow square sections cut
apart
• Flat work surfaces at least as large as a desk top
Activities:
1. Invite students to think of common activities of daily life that require thinking
interdependently. Some examples for discussion could be:
a. Team sports
b. A restaurant kitchen
2. Students form groups of four. Hand out packs to each group. Groups are to follow
guidelines on the worksheet to try and complete the task. Below is the solution – do
not show this to the students:
3. Guided Group Discussion - Debrief questions may include:
• What happened? What did you notice?
• What, if anything, do you recall getting in the way?
• When the group was having trouble, what did you notice about your own
thoughts and feelings?
• When did the group work well together?
9. Independent de-brief:
Think of a time when someone else’s assistance really helped you solve a problem or get
through a hard situation. What did that person do for and/or with you that was helpful?
What did he/she say? How did it feel to get this help?
Ask everyone to think of at least one situation in the coming week when they probably
will have a chance to work with another person to do something well.
