Product Reviews :: Real US made basketball shoes? You've got a chance to be kidding! My faithful set of two basketball shoes was wearing somewhat thin so I reluctantly decided arrived to replace them. Being concerned about what outsourcing is doing to the US economy I resolved that I would replace my old Reeboks (which were made in Korea) with a pair of real and 100% genuine "Made in USA" basketball shoes. During the method I wanted to remain out with the clutches with the scammers and spammers who were selling fake replica shoes. First I went online and looked at the dazzling assortment of beautiful new court shoes available, but there was no indication of where these might have been made so off I went along to Google. There I soon learned that all of big brand shoes like Big N? ( you know who I mean the king of shoes which made over the billion dollars profit recently) were made overseas, that the labor practices of their overseas plants seemed to be less than desirable, and the foreign operations of an number of U.S. shoe companies made a lot being desired. From there I decided to test the Mall and thought about the labels of all brand name basketball shoes - "Made in VietNam", "Made in Korea", Made in China", "Made in Thailand", "Made in "Indonesia" and "Made in Brazil". Not just one pair "Made in USA". This didn't manage to help much so I turned towards the hovering clerk and asked if she had any Made in USA shoes. That question seemed to bewilder her, so I asked clerks in other stores and those have been not stunned with that question told me that there was no such thing just as one American made basketball shoe, with all the possible exception of Chuck Taylors. I was soon to find out that even manufacture of these stalwarts was moved overseas when Nike bought out Converse in 2003. I went back home perplexed and a bit disappointed but resolved to travel straight on the horse?s mouth, so I started calling the organization headquarters of some with the major US shoe manufacturers to get the real story. Nike told me that they were still manufacturing in Indonesia "and other countries because region", knowning that "it wasn't economically feasible to manufacture inside the United States". This is the same company that designed a profit well over $450 million in the third quarter of 2007 alone? The nice lady at L.A. Gear seemed somewhat surprised when I asked if their shoes were produced in USA but told me that their shoes were produced in Brazil and several countries in Asia. Being nothing or even stubborn, I kept the phone warm and called Reebok but all I was told was that "All individuals shoes are made somewhere outside in the United States". When I told this lady that I was focused on shoes being manufactured in deplorable conditions overseas she sent me a good brochure which assured me that their shoes were manufactured under circumstances "appropriate in light of national practices and conditions". Several calls later I found that these countries were China, Thailand, Indonesia, Korea, and the Philippines. Sigh! K-Swiss shoes would only claim that they manufactured "offshore" however when I called New Balance I was told that 70% of the shoes are stated in the United States, using the remaining 30% stated in Europe and Asia. Sadly none with their shoes seemed to fit my tastes. Somewhat discouraged I sat down and considered it for a little. How much will it matter I wondered? How easily do principles give way to the need for better ankle support, brand loyalty, fashion or for better pricing? What's all this flap about foreign made replica shoes? Are all the shoes sold online fakes since they will be all made overseas? How can I tell if an online shoe site is selling fake replicas or perhaps the genuine real thing? Does it really matter providing that the shoes are great? What exactly can be a fake and what is real or genuine? So I made a decision to join the group and went back online and found a nice couple of basketball shoes from a company called kicksbay.com. They probably were not manufactured in USA however the price was right, these comfortable shoes were delivered punctually, are put well and seem to be just as good as my old Reeboks in the game. Their customer support was helpful and I will most likely buy from them the next time, regardless of whether I wish I could find a pair of Made in USA basketball shoes. And now I am developing a hard rethink about all the fuss the big manufactures are generating over "fake or replica" shoes. Is a set of two shoes that came out of the same factory that creates Nikes or Addidas? shoes just as good as the "genuine genuine thing" or would be the high prices we're paying just to support the big profits some companies decide to make? It is food for thought and possibly more articles.
