1. What They Control

This is the largest way in which pesticides are grouped and the most familiar.

Herbicide   Weeds or plants
Insecticide   Bugs (insects)
Fungicide   Fungi (diseases)
Rodenticide   Mice and rats
... and many more.

What about antibiotics? Well theoretically they control or inhibit the growth of bacteria, which makes them pesticides by definition. However, they are not considered pesticides because they are regulated by the FDA and not the EPA. It is the way it panned out in the creation of the laws and regulations.
