2. Chemical Family

The active ingredients of the pesticide are grouped based on their chemical properties. Related molecules are put into families. We always like to group things in science.

Family Type of Pesticide Common Name

Dithiocarbamates Fungicide Mancozeb
Strobilurins Fungicide Azoxystrobin
Organophosphate Insecticide Diazinon
Pyrethroids Insecticides lambda-Cyhalothrin
Triazine Herbicide Atrazine
Phenoxy Herbicide 2,4-D

This is not a complete list. Just a few examples to get the point across. A complete list would be the size of an EPA memo and too large for this website.

Since the molecules in these groups are similar, they often have related modes of actions.

We often hear about these groups of pesticides in the news. Active ingredients are often grouped into families, but it does not always mean each pesticide in that group acts exactly the same.
