3. Mode of Action

The mode of action is how the pesticide works on its target pest. Families can be related by mode of action or a family may have a specific unique mode of action.

Mode of Action Family Type of Pesticide

Acetylcholine esterase inhibitors Carbamates Insecticide
Sodium channel modulators Pyrethroids Insecticide
Sodium channel modulators Organophosphate Insecticide
Nucleic acid synthesis Acylalanines Fungicide
Classical Photosynthesis Inhibitor Triazines Herbicide
Growth Regulation Penoxys Herbicide

This is no where even near a complete list. Just a few examples to get the point across.

Information extracted from:
1. "Insecticide Mode of Action Table", Oklahoma State University.
2."Herbicide Classification by Site of Action", Illinois State University.
3. "Families of Fungicides for Turfgrass", The Ohio State University.

Since the molecules in these groups are similar, they are often in related families.
