Exploring Careers in Law Enforcement
Detective Jessica Zieman became interested in law enforcement at an early age.
While participating in an elementary school D.A.R.E. program, she became
curious about the role of a police officer in the community. As a teenager,
she joined the WCSO Search and Rescue program and credits this step for
helping prepare her for a future career in law enforcement.
“My time as an explorer influenced my desire to work
in law enforcement. It helped me not be intimidated by
a male-dominated career; seeing first-hand how female
deputies were just as successful as male deputies inspired
me. I enjoyed working with the public and how every day
there was a new challenge.”
Zieman graduated from the program in 2000 and joined WCSO as a volunteer reserve deputy in 2002. As a
reserve deputy, she worked temporarily in the Civil Unit. Eventually, she was hired on full-time and has worked
as a patrol deputy, patrol corporal and in March of 2018 was promoted to detective. Beyond her regular duties,
Zieman served as a SAR advisor for a decade from 2008 – 2018. She notes one of the best parts of that role was
providing training and guidance to many explorers who continued on to careers in law enforcement, military
and other public service careers.
