Singles

In her fifth week on the chart, Carly Rae Jepsen has hit top spot on the ARIA singles chart. Call Me Maybe debuted at the start of March and has made steady progress up the chart ever since. Nicki Minaj stays put at No.2 with Starships, while last week’s chart topper, We Are Young, has fun. sitting at No.3. Labrinth has moved into the top ten for the first time, currently at No.4 with Earthquake. Ed Sheeran’s Lego House has jumped from No.19 to No.14. In their second week on the chart T-Pain’s Turn All The Lights On and Stan Walker’s Music Won't Break Your Heart have both moved into the top 40 for the first time, hitting No.31 and No.35 respectively.

 

BOYFRIEND - Justin Bieber

No.5

Teen heartthrob, Justin Bieber picks up his second top ten on the ARIA singles chart with Boyfriend. The song is the first to be released from Bieber’s forthcoming album Believe. The song was co-written by Mike Posner, the man behind the hit Cooler Than Me (No.4 Oct. ’10). Bieber’s first top ten was with the song Baby (No.3 May ’10).

 

 

IF LOOKS COULD KILL - Timomatic

No.16

After just missing the top of the singles chart earlier this year with Set It Off (No.2 Jan. ’12), Timomatic returns with a new single, If Looks Could Kill. The track sees Timomatic working with production team DNA Songs again, their second single collaboration. Timomatic is set to release an album mid-way through 2012.

 

 

NEVER LET ME GO - Florence + The Machine

No.19

Never Let Me Go is the fourth and highest-charting track from Florence + The Machine’s album, Ceremonials (No.1 Nov. ’11). Previous tracks to come from the album include What The Water Gave Me (No.35 Sep. ’11), Shake It Out (No.36 Nov. ’11) and No Light, No Light (No.95 Jan. ’12). Famed fashion designer and photographer Karl Lagerfeld took the cover photo for the single.

 

 

ROCK THE BOAT - Bob Sinclar Feat. Pitbull, Dragonfly & Fatman Scoop

No.60

French DJ Bob Sinclar makes his first appearance on the ARIA singles chart in over four years with, Rock The Boat. The track comes from Sinclar’s latest album Disco Crash. Sinclar last appeared on the chart with Sound Of Freedom (No.22 Aug. ’07). He previously topped the chart with Love Generation (No.1 Feb. ’06).

 

 

WHAT DOESN'T KILL YOU (STRONGER) - Glee Cast

No.68

The first of three tracks to hit the chart for Glee this week is a cover of Kelly Clarkson’s hit, What Doesn't Kill You (Stronger). The original debuted at No.44 in December 2011 and peaked at No.18 in the middle of January this year. This week it sits at No.38 on the chart.

 

 

DO IT LIKE THAT - Ricki-Lee

No.69

After making her comeback late last year with Raining Diamonds (No.19 Nov. ’11), Ricki-Lee picks up a new chart entry with Do It Like That. Both singles are slated for release on her forthcoming third album. Ricki-Lee is soon set to be a mentor on TV series, The Voice.

 

 

SO GOOD - B.o.B

No.71

American singer-songwriter, B.o.B picks up his second chart entry from the album Strange Clouds, with the track So Good. It follows on from the title track (No.63 Oct. ’11). The song peaked at No.11 in the US and No.39 in Canada. B.o.B’s highest charting single in Australia was Airplanes (No.2 May ’10).

 

 

NOTHING'S REAL BUT LOVE - Rebecca Ferguson

After debuting last week on the ARIA albums chart with Heaven (No.40 Apr. ’12), Rebecca Ferguson this week makes her first appearance on the ARIA singles chart. Nothing's Real But Love was released as the album’s first single in the UK in late 2011. It peaked there at No.10.

 

 

CHILD - 360

No.77

Melbourne hip hop artist, 360 picks up his fifth entry on the ARIA singles chart from his album Falling & Flying, with the song Child (No.4 Oct. ’11). 360 has previously charted with the tracks Just Got Started (No.59 Mar. ’11), Throw It Away (No.79 June ’11), Killer (No.87 Oct. ’11) and Boys Like You (No.3 Feb. ’12). 360 is touring nationally in June.

 

 

WHAT YOU WANT - Evanescence

No.86

What You Want is the first single from Evanescence’s current self-titled album (No.5 Oct. ’11). The new single was released in August 2011, but failed to make an impact in the top 100 until now, which coincides with the band’s national tour. What You Want is their first appearance on the ARIA singles chart since Lithium (No.26 Jan. ’07) over five years ago.

 

 

FLY/I BELIEVE I CAN FLY - Glee Cast

No.87

This Glee track is a medley of Nicki Minaj’s Fly and R. Kelly’s I Believe I Can Fly. Minaj’s track, which features Rihanna, debuted and peaked at No.18 in September 2011. R. Kelly’s original, from the soundtrack to the film Space Jam, was released in January 1997 and peaked the following month at No.24.

 

 

HERE'S TO US - Glee Cast

No.91

The third Glee track to chart is Here’s To Us. The song was originally recorded by American hard rock band Halestorm. Halestorm are a four-piece who have released one album, five EPs, a live album and a number of singles. They are set to release a second album The Strange Case Of... this month.

 

 

WANTED TO FEEL - Natasha Duarte

No.92

Wanted To Feel is the debut solo EP from Sydney singer-songwriter, Natasha Duarte. Duarte has been the singer/guitarist for a band called A Bad Days Good Night. The band won a number of prizes including the Kool Schools Scholarship Competition and the Kick Start Career prize. She is currently working on her debut album.

 

 

GIRL GONE WILD - Madonna

No.93

As her album MDNA debuts at No.1 on the ARIA albums chart, Madonna picks up a new single chart entry with Girl Gone Wild. The song is the second to chart from the album, following on from Give Me All Your Luvin' (No.25 Feb. ’12). The track sees Madonna working with Italian producers Benny Benassi and his cousin, Alle Benassi.

Albums

The all-conquering Madonna picks up her tenth No.1 on the ARIA albums chart with, MDNA. Last week’s chart topper, the Hilltop HoodsDrinking From The Sun, has dropped to No.3, meanwhile One Direction maintains their hold of No.2 with, Up All Night. Moving up two spots gives Bob Seger another new peak with, Ultimate Hits: Rock and Roll Never Forgets at No.6.  Ed Sheeran picks up a new peak at No.8 with +. Katy Perry re-enters at No.19 with Teenage Dream, which has been given the deluxe treatment in the guise of The Complete Confection.

 

MDNA - Madonna
No.1

Almost four years since scoring a No.1 with Hard Candy (May ’08), Madonna returns with a new studio album, MDNA. It is the singer’s twelfth studio album and her tenth album to top the chart in Australia (including compilations). The album sees Madonna working with a number of well-known producers including Benny Benassi, Martin Solveig and William Orbit, as well as guest artists M.I.A. and Nicki Minaj. A world tour in support of the album begins in May. It is expected to head to Australia in 2013, twenty years since Madonna’s last toured here.

 

 

THE ULTIMATE COLLECTION - Creedence Clearwater Revival

No.14

This new two disc, 40 track collection brings together some of the stellar back catalogue of American rock group, Creedence Clearwater Revival. Among the tracks included are Fortunate Son, Proud Mary, Travellin’ Band, I Heard It Through The Grapevine, The Midnight Special and Who’ll Stop the Rain. The group released seven studio albums in their short recording history (1968-72), two of which topped the charts locally - Cosmo’s Factory and Pendulum. John Fogerty, the singer and songwriter for the group, is touring nationally in April.

 

 

NOCTOURNIQUET - The Mars Volta

No.18

The sixth studio album from American prog rockers, The Mars Volta, is their first release since Octahedron (No.41 July ’09), almost three years ago. Much of the music for this album was recorded shortly after Octahedron was completed. However, vocalist and lyricist Cedric Bixler-Zavala took a little more time to work on the album, feeling burned out by the pace with which the band was moving. Bixler-Zavala and guitarist Omar Rodríguez-López are shortly set to reunite with members of their previous band, At The Drive-In for a series of live dates.

 

 

THE O.F. TAPE VOLUME 2 - Odd Future

No.34

This is the debut studio release from American hip hop collective, Odd Future. The group includes rappers Earl Sweatshirt, Hodgy Beats, Frank Ocean and Tyler, The Creator, amongst others. Prior to the release of the album, the crew had released a number of mixtapes, as well as solo albums; the most successful of these being Tyler, the Creator’s Goblin (No.66 May ‘11).

 

 

TUSKEGEE - Lionel Richie

No.36

Lionel Richie’s tenth studio album is his first to chart in Australia since Just For You (No.44 June ’04). Tuskegee is named after the city in Alabama where Richie was born. The album is a collection of fourteen tracks from Richie’s back catalogue re-imagined with the assistance of a number of artists including Kenny Rogers, Shania Twain, Willie Nelson, Jimmy Buffett and Tim McGraw.

 

 

KOLOSS - Meshuggah

No.43

Swedish extreme metal band Meshuggah make their first ever appearance on the ARIA albums chart with, Koloss. The album is the group’s seventh studio release and their first in four years. The vinyl version of the album has been pressed onto special edition brown vinyl.

 

 

NOTHING'S GONNA CHANGE THE WAY YOU FEEL ABOUT ME NOW - Justin Townes Earle

No.51

American singer-songwriter Justin Townes Earle makes his debut on the ARIA albums chart with Nothing's Gonna Change The Way You Feel About Me Now. It is the fifth studio album from the son of songwriter Steve Earle - the first was released in 2007. Steve Earle is touring Australia through April, including appearances at Bluesfest and Boogie Festival.

 

 

KIDS IN THE STREET - The All-American Rejects
No.65

Following on from the chart success of When The World Comes Down (No.35 Mar. ’09), The All-American Rejects return to the charts with a new album - Kids In The Street. It is their fourth studio album and was produced by Greg Wells (Adele, Katy Perry). The album’s first single, Beekeeper’s Daughter, aired on the new series of 90210 the same day that it was released.

 

 

SONIK KICKS - Paul Weller

No.72

The eleventh solo studio album from British singer-songwriter, Paul Weller, is the sixth studio album to chart locally for the former leader of The Jam and The Style Council. The follow-up to Wake Up The Nation (No.63 May ’10) features a number of collaborators including Noel Gallagher (Oasis), Graham Coxon (Blur) and a number of family members. The album debuted at No.1 in the UK, Weller’s fourth as a solo artist.

 

 

LIFE AT BEST - Eli Young Band

No.75

American country group formed in 2000, Eli Young Band makes their debut on the ARIA albums chart with their fourth studio album, Life At Last. Guitarists Mike Eli and James Young met while sharing a dorm in college and began to write songs together after playing together. Their debut self-titled album was released in 2002. The group has been touring nationally with Faith Hill and Tim McGraw.

 

 

AMARYLLIS - Shinedown

No.78

The fourth studio album from American alt-metal band, Shinedown is their first to chart locally. The album is the follow-up to 2008’s The Sound Of Madness. That album peaked at No.8 in the US, their highest position to date. In 2011, they released the two-disc live album Somewhere In The Stratosphere.

 

 

DJANGO DJANGO - Django Django

No.82

British quartet Django Django hit the chart with their debut self-titled album. The band - David Maclean (drums), Vincent Neff (vocals/guitar), Jimmy Dixon (bass) and Tommy Grace (synths) formed in 2009 when they were attending art school. They have been the first band confirmed to appear at this year’s Splendour In The Grass.

 

 

THINKING IN TEXTURES - Chet Faker

No.87

Melbourne artist Chet Faker (aka Nick Murphy) makes his debut on the ARIA chart with the seven-track release, Thinking In Textures. Chet Faker first came to wide attention when his take on the Blackstreet hit - No Diggity (No.21 Feb. ’97) appeared online (it is also included on this album). Faker will be playing a number of shows around the country to launch the mini-album in late April.

 

 

EN VIVO! - Iron Maiden

No.97

The new live album from British metal titans, Iron Maiden comes from the band’s Final Frontier World Tour and was recorded in Santiago, Chile on 10 April 2011. The tour lasted just over a year and included 101 shows. Coincidentally, the band’s last chart entry, From Fear To Eternity The Best Of 1990-2010, also debuted at No.91 in June 2011.

 

 

STAIRWELLS - Kina Grannis

No.94

American singer-songwriter Kina Grannis makes her debut on the ARIA albums chart with, Stairwells. Grannis has self-released a number of albums since 2005. She recently rose to prominence thanks to the video for her song In Your Arms. The stop motion video used 288,000 jelly beans and took two years to complete.
