Introduction to Habits of Mind
Lesson 1: What are habits?
1. What is a habit? Discuss with the class.
2. How are habits formed?
• Fold your arms. Which arm is on top? Now try it with the other arm on top.
• Clasp hands. Which thumb is on top? Now try it with the opposite thumb on top.
• Discuss how this might happen. Do you think you could do this the opposite way?
Why or why not?
3. Divide into groups of 4 or 5. (Senior School Home Groups should have students from
different year levels in each group.)
• In your group, make a list of good habits and bad habits.
• What makes a habit good? What makes a habit bad?
4. Discuss the habits as a class. Make a list on the whiteboard of all the good and bad
habits that groups have thought of.
5. Is it possible to change a bad habit? How would you go about doing so?
