1. Teacher and students brainstorm the meaning of ‘risk’.
Definition: The likelihood of loss or less-than-expected returns.
To expose to the chance of injury or loss; hazard: to risk one's life.
To venture upon; take or run the chance

2. PowerPoint – ‘Responsible Risk Taking’ - Talk to students about the development of
snowboarding and discuss how snowboarding was at first snubbed because it broke
away from traditional snow sports. (See PowerPoint slides and slide notes)
Watch clip ‘Old School Snowboarding’ (URL found on slide 2).
3. Go through information on slide 3.
Then introduce clip ‘Snowboarding now’ to show how the sport has progressed (URL
found on slide 5). You also need to emphasis the fact that the actual snowboarders
took courageous risks to develop their skills and become proficient, recognised riders.
4. Work through task sheet with students which related ‘taking responsible risks’ (pg. 26)
back to classroom participation.
