Listening With Understanding and Empathy


Pair Work

1. One person is to be the speaker, the other person is to be the listener.
2. The following instructions will be given to each party.

3. When it is over, each party is to answer the debriefing questions individually.
4. Come back to a whole Home Group discussion about the questions on the review

sheets.


The Speaker

1. You will have several minutes to think about what you are going to say.
2. You will need to speak about a significant/important incident in your life.

3. You will need to tell the details of this as well as convey how you felt.

4. You should be able to speak for at least two minutes.
5. Your listener will not interrupt you in any way.




The Listener
1. You must listen carefully, seriously and confidentially.

2. You will not interrupt the speaker in any way.

3. You can use non-verbal responses, such as facial gestures, nodding etc
4. You are responsible for the physical arrangement of your conversation, e.g you may

sit on the floor or chairs, you can face each other, sit side by side, sit with your backs
resting against each other, lie down on the floor etc.
